Following the President's emergency declaration, the deadline to file and pay federal income tax has been automatically extended from April 15th, 2020 to July 15th, 2020.
All taxpayers are not required to file any additional forms to qualify for this special tax filing and payment relief. Hence the deadline extension, there will be no penalty or interest accrued if filed by/on July 15th. However, if a taxpayer is unable to file federal income tax by the extended deadline, he or she may still request a filing extension and penalties and interest will begin to accrue on any remaining unpaid balances as of July 16, 2020.
Please note that the deadline extension applies only to federal income returns and tax payments, while state tax deadline may or may not be extended. For the Georgia state, the deadline has been also extended to July 15th, 2020. Though, for other states, it is advised to check with your state tax agency for the deadline to file state income tax. You may find your state tax agency's website at www.taxadmin.org/state-tax-agencies
As for the federal tax, the IRS will issue most refunds within 21 business days and despite the extended deadline, the IRS urges taxpayers who are due a refund to file as soon as possible.
